Ophthalmology

The branch of medicine that deals with the study of normal structure, diseases, treatment and surgical procedures on the eye is called Ophthalmology. The aim of teaching Ophthalmology is to train the undergraduate students about basics of clinical Ophthalmology to enable them to carry out evaluation, investigation and basic treatment of patients or to refer them to an appropriate specialist. The students are expected to learn to recognize common eye diseases, their treatment as well as counseling patients and member of the community on preventive measures. The students will also be exposed to case presentations, assessment in minor
surgical procedure and observe advanced investigations such as FFA, OCT and computerized visual field analysis etc. Ophthalmologist not only addresses various elements related to the eye but also contributes in a significant way to improve the quality of life of a patient. A person whose cataract is removed, vision corrected or cornea replaced can testify to a vast improvement in quality of life.
